Our Fleet

Foss Maritime is dedicated to industry innovation and creative solutions. From introducing the first tugboat launches in Tacoma in the late 1800’s to diesel tugboats and developing the first Tractor tugs and one‐of‐a‐kind hybrid tugs. Foss has been focused on optimizing our fleet from the very beginning. We continue to build, design and add state-of-the-art vessels to our powerful fleet and most recently added three ASD-90 Tier 4 tugs which meet the EPA’s highest emissions standards.

Featured Projects

Foss is proud to serve our global community with specialized maritime services. From providing disaster relief efforts in the United States, Haiti and Puerto Rico and emergency rescue towing to most recently towing a decommissioned Navy vessel from the U.S. West Coast to Texas via the Panama Canal. During the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Foss assisted the USNS Mercy ship into to the Port of Los Angeles to serve as a backup hospital for the city of Los Angeles.
Everett Crane Move
Foss Maritime transported two gantry cranes from the Port of Los Angeles to the Port of Everett, for use at the Port’s South Terminal.
First U.S. Flagged LNG Bunker Barge
Foss Maritime has been deeply involved in the design and construction of the first U.S. flagged liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge, the Clean Jacksonville.
Delivery of Nations Largest Floating Dock
Foss Maritime brought a semi-submersible ship carrying the nation’s largest floating drydock, the Vigorous, up the Willamette River to Vigor Industrial’s Portland, Oregon shipyard. Two Foss tugs, the Pacific Escort and the Tiger 9, now named the Kalama, assisted one of the world’s largest heavy-lift ships, the Blue Marlin, and its oversized drydock cargo safely upriver and on schedule.
Historic Final Voyage
In 2014, Foss escorted the USS Constellation aircraft carrier on her historic final voyage. The Kitty Hawk-class supercarrier, nicknamed “Connie” by her crew, was successfully towed by ocean tug Corbin Foss from Bremerton Naval Shipyard to Brownsville, Texas to be retired and scrapped. The 16,000-mile journey took 160 days, with Foss guiding the massive vessel along Mexico and Central and South America, passing through the Straits of Magellan before heading north to Texas.

Safety Information

Our safety culture has now progressed to the point where we are tracking our incident free time in months, not days. We provide frequent reports on the ever-growing number of Job Safety Analyses, Near Misses and Safety Observations that are being reported every day. We have multiple Regional Safety Committees that provide another venue to support our push to zero initiatives, and we continually review and discuss notable near misses and observations, safety alerts and safety bulletins.
  • ABS Quality Evaluations (ABS QE)

    ABS QE (ABS Quality Evaluations) ISO 14001 environmental management program specifies the actual requirements for the environmental management systems. The program emphasizes continuous improvement and innovation as the blueprint to achieve the zero trace goal. With this certification, Foss has committed to:

      1. Implement, maintain and improve an environmental management system;
      2. Assure conformance with its own stated environmental policy (those policy commitments of course must be made);
      3. Demonstrate conformance;
      4. Ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations;
      5. Seek certification of its environmental management system by an external third party organization; and,
      6. Make self-determination of conformance.
  • International Organization of Standards (ISO)
    (International Organization of Standards) provides a framework and common technological language between suppliers and their customers throughout the globe to define standards and processes of our business systems. Foss complies with ISO 9000 Quality Management System standards and has been certified by American Bureau of Shipping, a third party auditor.
  • International Safety Management (ISM Code)
    (International Safety Management), established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), promotes a “safety culture” and requires that companies develop a Safety Management System SMS). It helps companies commit to giving priority to safety and environmental protection in their operational activities. The company has attained its Document of Compliance through third party auditing by ABS. Although voluntary for the majority of the fleet, all of our tugs also undergo annual auditing to maintain their own individual Safety Management Certificates demonstrating compliance with the system.
  • American Waterway Operators – Responsible Carrier Program (AWO RCP)
    (American Waterway Operators – Responsible Carrier Program) is a domestic set of safety, quality and environmental standards for the US tugboat, towboat and barge industry. Foss was the first company on the US west coast to become recertified under the RCP, and our Safety Management System continues to meet third party certification requirements.
